There are three men sitting in a saloon at the beginning of the California gold rush. All keen to make their fortune but with limited financial resources. Three days into their journey, they come across an old prospector lying half-dead on the trail. In his hand, he is clutching a gold nugget the size of a tennis ball worth a thousand dollars. He offers them the nugget in exchange for enough food and water for him to continue his journey.

The man who bought the tools, seeing a quick profit immediately agrees. However, the man who bought the food refuses because if they part with any of their limited supplies, they will not have enough food for themselves but suggests they take the old prospector back to town on the mule for a share of the nugget. But the man who bought the mule, says that the mule is too tired to make the journey and that they should give the old prospector a hand back to his claim. Then use their tools to dig for gold, and the mule to carry it back down the mountain in exchange for equal shares in the gold. However, the man who bought the tools says that as they only have one pickaxe, one spade and one shovel, it would mean an unequal share of the workload.

Clutching the nugget feebly in his hand, the old prospector explains that the nugget he is holding is the smallest nugget he could find, that he had found nuggets the size of footballs and that the seam he had found covered the area of a football pitch. More gold than any of them could ever wish for, and no way was he going to share his find with anyone as equal partners. However, he is prepared to offer them fifty percent of the claim, if they are prepared to share their resources.

An argument between the three partners then ensues. The man who bought the tools saying they should just take the nugget in exchange for some food and water. The man who bought the food and water saying they can go and find the claim for themselves and the man who bought the mule insisting that equal shares is a fair offer and they shouldn't accept less. As they are arguing, the old prospector dies and whilst now the richer by a thousand dollars, the three men never found the old prospectors claim nor did they strike gold.

The moral to this story is this. Information is the most valuable commodity on this planet. Sharing their resources and working together would have made them all rich beyond their dreams. Greed and their refusal to agree to work together, cost them dear, which is pretty much what happens in all walks of business today.

Information, when used in the most productive manner can be used to turn an idea into wealth and when it comes to marketing, if that information is relevant, anticipated and eagerly received, fortunes can be made.
