Vacations in Alsace - East France - Bas Rhin, Haut Rhin. Vacations in Alsace and Lorraine, two historic provinces in eastern France are ideally situated for visiting Germany. Until 1648, Alsace and Lorraine was part of the Holy Roman Empire. It wasn't until 1697 that Alsace was added to France by the Treaty of Rijswijck. Lorraine was originally part of the kingdom of Lotharingia, which was divided in 959 into the duchies of Lower (bas) and Upper (Haut) Lorraine. The latter, later became modern Lorraine and was an independent but much fought over duchy. Fighting did not stop until 1766. Between 1871 and 1918, Alsace now the departments of Bas-Rhin and Haut-Rhin and eastern Lorraine, the department of Moselle, were annexed by Germany after the defeat of France in the Franco-Prussian War. From the 10th to the middle of 12th century, the counts of Poitou were also the dukes of Aquitaine, and the city of Poitiers prospered.
