If you were to believe everything you read on websites dedicated to showing you how to get rich quick, you would think that making money on the internet was easy. The get rich quick schemes, the "I'm rich and I'll show you how to get rich too" scams and the guaranteed "how to make money on the internet" books and ezines that ask you to subscribe are all looking for gullible fools, people desperate to earn money and prepared to try anything and are usually thinly disguised MLM and pyramid scams. Few of the authors are genuinely making what we would consider to be a fortune; most are making money from selling their books and not actually practicing what they preach.

We were extremely reluctant to take time out of making money to put The Golden Web together. If we or anyone else for that matter were making money out of the internet, why waste time writing a book that had to compete with the rubbish already published? Furthermore, why give away hard-earned secrets and end up competing with millions of other internet entrepreneurs?

We only agreed to collaborate on the basis that if we were going to show people how to really make money on the internet, we would make money from them making money. This might appear to be somewhat mercenary but at least we are not hiding the fact that our sole intention is to earn money out of showing you how to make money.

HOW THE INTERNET REALLY WORKS

If you are setting up an internet business or looking for ways to make money on the internet, it is essential that you have a solid and basic understanding of all the areas of your business. The internet is no exception nor is it any different from opening an office or shop in that respect. If your plans for internet success include winning new customers through your web pages or new website, you cannot just troop off to a local website designer and hope they have the skill and understanding of the internet and search engines to build you a website that is going to compete at a high level.

This also applies to free websites that look like exceptionally good value for money considering you are spending nothing, but in reality are a simple scam. Companies that offer free websites are just getting people to build content for them that they use to generate traffic to their own pages and advertisements where they will earn money. If you build a free website on another website, you are just acting as slave or free labour. Neat idea, not employing any staff and just getting naïve internet entrepreneurs to work for nothing. If you build a free website, it will never get any meaningful traffic to generate you an income but the company providing the free service will do very nicely out of your free labour. Just think about it - why would someone go to the trouble of building a system allowing people to build a free website if they weren't making money from them somewhere? If you have built yourself a free website in the past - DOH!

We speak to so many people who say they have a friend or family member who is a whiz with computers and will build them a website. We know someone who is a nurse but we wouldn't trust her to perform brain surgery on us. To succeed on the internet, you need a website and to build it you have to have someone with talents of Olympic proportions not someone who jogs for a hobby. The internet is so big it is impossible to conceive. It can't be done, anymore than you can conceive the idea of infinity and the universe just going on forever. If you are starting an internet business, your website is going to be competing against millions of websites in your market sector, most of which never get seen by anyone but their owners.

Furthermore, the internet is growing at an unprecedented rate, not just because of the number of new websites that are being uploaded everyday but because many of these websites carry tens and sometimes hundreds of thousands of web pages and are being added to by the second. Each web page, if configured correctly, is a doorway to their website for a specified search term. Google and most of the other major search engines like large websites with masses of content that are getting high visitor levels. If you have a website with ten pages, you probably have more chance of winning the lottery than of your ten pages being found amongst the billions of web pages that are stored on the internet.

If you understand how the internet works, it is possible to make money on the internet; very few people actually make a fortune and most fail and lose money. The people who succeed, do so because they use their commonsense, are prepared to work hard and stick to the tried and tested formulas. We will be explaining how many of these work throughout the book. There are no short cuts, what appear to be clever guaranteed ways of getting rich are almost certainly scams and there are definitely no guarantees. Just because we make a lot of money doing what we do, does not mean you will do the same. Bear that in mind before investing any money in any project. In fact, before you spend any money on what you think might be your quick road to fame and fortune, we suggest you try out some of our ideas where all you have to do is invest some time to test the water without spending a penny.

We would rather you invested a little time to test out our theories than jump in with both feet and lose money, albeit a little. Not everyone is cut out to be an internet entrepreneur and there are many predators lurking on the internet who will be very persuasive and promise you the earth in order to get you to part with your hard earned cash. Unless you have every confidence in your abilities; keep your hands in your pockets.

In order to make money on the internet or own a successful website it is essential to have a basic understanding of how the internet works. Too many people waste their money on useless websites or internet income generation schemes because they don't know what they are doing. They provide a website designer with their specifications and the designer delivers what they requested. When someone tells you to be careful what you wish for because you may get it, it is more pertinent to website design than just about everything else. The same applies to websites telling you how easy it is to make money by subscribing to their scheme. There is no such thing as easy money, only easily parted money and if you cannot accept this fact, sooner or later, you are going to get your fingers burned. If you don't understand how the internet works, how can you possibly tell a website designer how you want your website to work or know how to recognise a genuine business opportunity? Do your apprenticeship first and understand that if we haven't recommended something, it is most likely because it is a scam.
