Residential Development at Little London, Nurseries, Hillingdon, West London
Client: McLean Homes Year: 2001-2002 Primary Species/Habitats Assessed: Stag Beetle Lucanus cervus ecosulis ltd was commissioned to undertake a Stag Beetle presence/absence study of the site, which comprised former plant nurseries scheduled for residential development. One adult female Stag Beetle and one larva were recorded at the site, identifying this as a breeding site for the species. The Stag Beetle is listed on Appendix III of the Bern Convention, on Appendix 2 of the Habitat Directive, on Schedule 5 of Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981 (as amended), and as a Priority Species on the UK Biodiversity Action Plan (2003). Staff of ecosulis ltd researched current methodologies for Stag Beetle habitat creation and subsequently created a log pile in July/August 2001 as mitigation for loss of existing habitat to development. The log pile habitat was inspected one year later in July 2002, and a new generation of Stag Beetle larvae was recorded, proving that the new habitat had been successfully colonised. The residential development at the site is now complete and the instructions for future maintenance of the Stag Beetle habitat have been passed to the current landowners. |
