SUCCESSFUL INTERNET MARKETING
Successful internet marketing, creating a recognisable brand and developing an image online using successful internet marketing techniques
I often read articles on the web where the writer is talking about internet marketing and advertising as if they are the same thing. Successful internet marketing and advertising are actually two connected but different mediums and it is important to understand the distinct differences or you can end up doing a poor job in both areas.
Marketing, whether it is on the internet or offline is about developing a brand and image, and creating brand awareness; advertising is about generating sales and whilst the two are inextricably linked, they are separate schools and either one can let the other down. I cover internet advertising in the next chapter so let's just talk about internet marketing for the time being because if you don't get your marketing right, your advertising will suffer as a result.

CREATING A RECOGNISABLE BRAND
Internet marketing can cover a range of mediums when it comes to the internet and creating a recognisable brand.
- Choice of domain name
- Logo design
- Website design
- Public relations
- Affiliate marketing
- Search engine marketing
- Email marketing
Some of these subjects are covered in greater detail under different chapters so this is an overview of how each marketing medium fits in with the others how they can be used to create brand awareness.
CHOICE OF DOMAIN NAME
How you choose your domain name should depend on how wide a target market you are going after and how deep your pockets are to fund your marketing. If your plans include world
domination you need to have plenty of money behind you or have
internet business partners with the resources
to create huge brand awareness.
DEVELOPING AN IMAGE ONLINE
If you will be attacking the internet as a big player your domain name needs to be your brand name and this needs to be easily remembered and capture the imagination. It does not necessarily have to mean anything or reflect your product or service it just needs to be easily remembered to make developing an image on line easier.
eBay, MoonPig,
Utopele, Google, FaceBook,
Boogami, Amazon, and Yahoo are all typical examples of internet companies who chose names based on their marketing resonance that would mean nothing to anyone were it not for the huge marketing campaigns they have run to get their names out there.
You can bet your life that most of these names weren't just conjured up in a second; many will have been tossed around for days and weeks and market tested before finally being settled upon. Large companies spend millions on marketing just one product and know that the choice of a brand name can make or kill a product.
Start your own business
Fantastic business idea
So if you have millions to throw at your marketing, you can choose a name and register the domain name providing it is available. If it isn't, then think of another name because someone has beaten you to the post. Then register all the other derivative domain names to ensure some little scum merchant doesn't try and pass themselves off as you. You need to ensure that all domains are available before registering your first as there are plenty of low ethic individuals who will try and piggyback on your marketing success.
USING SUCCESSFUL INTERNET MARKETING TECHNIQUES
Back during the dotcom boom, idiots were paying millions of dollars to buy domain names. If they were stupid enough to do that, no wonder so many of them went bust. A domain name only becomes valuable once the business becomes valuable. Until then, it is worth nothing more than the registration fee.
Internet predators made fortunes out of registering domain names and then finding people foolish enough to pay fortunes for them instead of just using their imagination and finding another name. Once the internet registrars decided to start adding .org, .net, .eu, .tv etc, the inability to find the name you wanted disappeared.
So what kind of domain name do you choose if you don't have a bottomless pit as a marketing budget? Again, this will depend on what line of business you are in and what your target market is. You will most likely be more dependent on search engine traffic through the organic listings, in which case you domain name should include important keywords.
Let's say for example that you are in the holiday and travel business.
Worldwideholidays.com is not a good name because no one is going to use worldwide as a keyword when doing a search although the domain name does describe what the site is about. Discountholidaysvacationstravel.com would work well for the search engines but is pretty crap as a name because it is difficult to remember, spell and market. Both names in fact are also like a million other websites that are all floundering around the internet gasping for air.
Words like - best, direct, compare, 4U etc have all been kicked to death as far as I am concerned. I know that there are tens of thousands of websites out there all using these terms but I can't for the life of me remember any of them off the top of my head.
