SUCCESSFUL ENTREPRENEUR QUALITIES NEEDED TO SUCCEED

Successful entrepreneur qualities needed to succeed are not something you can learn, you either have them or you haven't

By the end of the third week, we were the longest serving carriers on the workforce, and on the final evening my little Egyptian pal and I were summoned up to the chateau where the Maitre was waiting with the owner who spoke excellent English. I thought we had been summoned for being slow or having committed some error because they had constantly sacked people for any and the slightest misdemeanour.

Instead, we were treated to a formidable meal, given a room with luxuriant sheets and mattress (a welcome reward after the hard cot I had been sleeping on), and a bonus of one thousand francs (£100) each. A small but welcome reward, and an appreciation for our efforts.

Despite his small stature, the little Egyptian chap, I have oft told my children, was the biggest man I ever met. Determination, persistence, endurance and an unwillingness to give in put him a head and shoulders above everyone who worked during that September - and above everyone I have ever met since.

Sadly I forget his name and I wonder if he went onto greater things or if his lowly position kept him chained and unable to make his way further in life. I hope he was able to channel his unequalled qualities into something that let him rise above his station; somehow I think he would have found a way.

So when I am talking to potential entrepreneurs who think that they have what it takes to succeed, I am looking for someone with determination and persistence to endure the tough rigours of being in business.

DESIRE

That extra twenty Francs a day would have been really important to that little Egyptian chap. Albeit that we were working for the equivalent of just £12.00 per day, back in Egypt in the early seventies that would have been a good income. He had a desire to keep going when bigger men gave up and, whilst that desire was driven by a need, other Egyptians who had arrived with him threw in the towel along with everyone else.

The desire to succeed, the desire to win, the desire to make money, grow rich, accumulate wealth, win fame or any other ambition is the motivation that sets successful entrepreneurs apart from the also-rans.

Most people would like to be rich but few are willing to do more than buy a lottery ticket. I speak to people all the time about their dreams of setting up their own business. For most it will just remain a dream because the desire is not great enough to pay the price for success.

I can tell you now that if you want to become a successful entrepreneur you are going to bleed and you are going to hurt for many years to come. I am talking metaphorically of course but business will throw every curve ball, every punch, every disappointment at you, and you will have to learn to duck and roll with the punches.

Start your own business

Fantastic business idea

When things go wrong it will always be your fault - always. There is no such thing as good luck in business. You make your own luck. Likewise, there is no such thing as bad luck. You will come across people who will cheat and steal from you; market conditions will beat you down; people will cancel sales; your bank will be a bunch of arseholes (they all are); things will go wrong; cash flow will make life difficult and the general vagaries of business will trip you up at every turn. You cannot blame anyone but yourself if things go wrong; you should have spotted the cheats and thieves, recognised when market trends were likely to take a turn for the worse, known you couldn't depend on a client, managed your cash flow better, and I have already warned you that your bank are a load of thieving bastards.

In short, the buck stops at your desk and only your desire to succeed will keep you getting up each time you get knocked down. You haven't failed until you fail to get up - at which point you become a quitter.

Of course you have to recognise when you are banging your head against a wall, or are in an impossible situation where you can't possibly win. But that is when you need your commonsense and can look at all your options. Choosing the right option will allow you to survive and reinvent yourself. Most successful entrepreneurs have been made bankrupt or failed at numerous business ventures before they became a success. The one thing they didn't lose was their desire to succeed.

WEALTHY ENTREPRENEURS

I will do my utmost to put most people off becoming an internet entrepreneur because I honestly believe most people don't have the qualities necessary to succeed. It is the ones that come back fighting with all the answers as to why I should give them the chance that I may offer the opportunity to. If they agree with me and accept that they haven't got what it takes then they obviously haven't and I will have saved them a lot of pain.

People who have gone into safe careers with a regular income and the promise of a comfortable pension will rarely be the type of person that will succeed as an entrepreneur and many would mess their pants at the thought of giving everything up and taking any kind of risk. This is why bank employees don't have the qualities to advise entrepreneurs about business.

You have to be prepared to take risks, put your neck on the line, work all the hours God sends (and a few extra that I will send you) and be prepared to take the punches. You have to decide just how badly you want success and riches. If you have any doubts about yourself (any at all) then the life of an internet entrepreneur is not the life for you.

If you believe you can do it part time, want to keep your day job, think you can build a business on the internet without a 100% commitment, or think you can sit by your swimming pool whilst the money flows in, then think again. All you will ever do is build a part time income; you will never, ever become a wealthy entrepreneur because you simply don't have the balls for the job.

Wealthy entrepreneurs never had any doubts about whether or not they would succeed. They didn't dangle one foot in the water. They dived into the deep end and started to strike out either to get to the other side or stop themselves from drowning. Unless you have that same commitment, you will undoubtedly fail. If you have any doubts whatsoever, the best business decision you will ever make is not to go into business.
