ADVICE ON ADVERTISING A SECOND HAND CAR
- Second hand cars that are competitively priced sell much quicker than advertisers who are trying to squeeze the best price out of a buyer.
- There is no point in advertising a second hand car at a premium if you are prepared to accept a much lower price. Be prepared to haggle but if your asking price is realistic, don't drop too much.
- If you are open to offers – say so.
- Use good quality images.
- Provide as much information about mileage, condition, service history and any other relevant information as possible.
- Exact type of car: if it's a Ford Escort 1.6 GLX 5-door, make it clear that – it is a Ford Escort GLX 5-door.
- The year and registration letters: 1998/V is the most exact. V- reg or 1999 model-year might sound better, but the buyer will ask anyway.
- Mileage: If your car has low mileage, state how low.
- Colour: - 'metallic red' means more to most buyers than Rising sun ochre.
- Tax : How long? Be precise about when it runs out.
- MOT: How long? Be precise about when it runs out.
- Don't lie about the service history: If it has a genuine recorded history, say so. If it's complete, put full service history.
- Include details about number of owners if there aren't many for the age of the car.
- Sell the features on your car - alloy wheels, electric windows, air conditioning, central locking and so on - to set your car apart from the others.
- Make sure your telephone number and email address are correct.
- Thoroughly clean and polish your car
