I've been on enough sales training courses to last me a lifetime and I wouldn't waste another second of the little time I have left sitting in a training room listening to the bollocks that sales trainers spout forth.
WHY SALES TRAINING IS A WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY
I have never met a sales trainer who wasn't a failed salesman. If you are succeeding in sales and making a lot of money, you don't give up a successful career to teach others. That is of course unless you don't enjoy selling, are worn out and washed up or like the sound of your own voice.
Successful sales people are born not taught, you can't teach qualities and characteristics any more than you can teach intelligence or commonsense. You can provide information but only high calibre sales people can put that information to good use and they will almost certainly already be one step ahead of a low calibre sales trainer.
Sales are only made when a salesman is selling and any time taken away from doing what he or she does best is time wasted. It is far more profitable to feed a few high calibre sales personnel with a constant flow of high quality sales leads than to spend time trying to teach mediocre sales people how to sell. The best sales people are self taught and don't need sales trainers to show them how to improve, they learn from each other.

Good sales people sell instinctively. The argument I was always faced with was that if you gave someone the skills to do the job they would succeed. What was never taken into account was the fact that most people don't have the balls to do the job in the first place. All the training in the world won't provide someone with the courage to cold call day in day out. The attrition rate is too high and therefore unprofitable.
