Every successful businessman or entrepreneur will have certain skills and qualities in common. Some may have more than others, some may have an abundance of one type, some will be more entrepreneurial and others more business skills. Successful people tend to be risk takers, prepared to go out on a limb and have selling skills they use to recruit and surround themselves with the people they need in order to succeed.

Skills can be learned, the qualities that make up the character of a successful businessman can only be discovered within yourself. If they are not there, nothing in the world is going to suddenly make them appear. However, whilst I have never been able to look at someone and determine if they have the balls for the job, many people who believe they have, turn out to be lacking in the balls department and many who thought they were lacking backbone suddenly find an inner strength and courage when faced with defeat.

DO YOU HAVE THE QUALITIES NEEDED TO SUCCEED?

You may already be in business but finding success elusive or may be you are considering going into business for yourself and wondering if you have the skills to do the job. Whilst some skills are a necessary requirement, it is the makeup of your personality that will be the driving force that will determine whether you succeed or fail.

I can only generalise here, but people can be fitted into to basic categories. Those who left school looking for a safe career path with a secure position and guaranteed income and those who had their minds set on going into business for themselves one day.

Obviously you can gain success working for a company but there is only room for one Managing Director or CEO and so promotion and improvement is in the hands of other people who control your destiny. This is not to say that you cannot end up earning a considerable income if you reach the top of a major company but you will never end up owning it and someone or others, will have control over your working life and future.

On the other hand, going self-employed or owning your own company is fraught with dangers and the only guarantee is you. There is no protection, nobody is going to pay you a wage if you are off sick, underperforming, or not bringing in the business. You are the only safety net and the only person who can make things happen. There will be times when your house is on the line, when overheads are exceeding income and when everybody is depending on you to make the right decisions.

That doesn't paint a particularly attractive picture but successful people who own their own businesses deplore the idea of having a regular income or knowing that, no matter hard they work, they will only get paid a certain amount each month. Successful business people want more, they relish the risks involved, they don't take orders, they give them and they want to be in control of their own destinies.

Successful people go out on a limb everyday, they have dreams they need to fulfil, they go to work no matter how they feel and they do whatever it takes to be successful. Most people, when they fully understand the commitment required realise they don't have what it takes. The real winners are few and far between; they want more out of life and they are ready to do battle and if necessary bleed if that is what is needed to succeed.

Successful people have total belief in themselves, even if no one else does and in order to succeed. They achieve because they believe they can win and if you are thinking of going down that route, you must believe in yourself and have zero doubts.
