Book Murder at the Regal Hotel continued:

"So then I waited about ten minutes or so, and then I went in. I was supposed to meet him at midnight and I didn't want to be too late to see him."

"Did you see any body coming out?"

"Nobody, and then when I got to room forty-one, where he said he'd be, I saw the door was open. So I went in. And I saw Frenchie on the floor. He wasn't dead at that point. He was groaning a lot. I could see he'd been shot. In the chest. The gun was on the floor. It was a Smith & Wesson 6 mm automatic. It had just been fired, I could smell it"

"What? How do you know that? Did you pick it up?"

"Yes, and I put it down exactly as it was, so as not to disturb the evidence."

"You handled it?"

Greg was indignant. "Yes, but I'm not stupid. I put rubber gloves on before I picked it up. I didn't leave any fingerprints on it."

"How did you know what kind of gun it was? Where did you learn about guns?"

"I read it up. On the internet."

"Why?"

"I wanted to be a better detective. So I thought I should know about guns."

I sighed, "Well, I suppose that's all very praiseworthy. There must be a lot of guns involved in Y.Y.Wyatt's divorce cases." I turned to Jane. "Y.Y. deals exclusively with divorce cases and domestic stuff. Lots of divorce case in Cardiff involve guns."

My sarcasm must have been obvious because Jane got very angry with me.

"Don't be too critical with him. He's trying to improve himself. And he might come across a gun some time."

"Yeah. He has. Just now, hasn't he? But to pick it up!" I turned to Greg again. "So what happened next?"

"The police arrived just as I was checking the gun."

"The police? Who exactly?"

It was Sergeant Williams."

"Ah. Sherlock's sergeant. So he came and saw you in the room with a man who had been shot, and you were holding the smoking gun?"

"Yes, and he jumped to the conclusion that . . ."

I interrupted him, "Unreasonable of him, wasn't it? No logic at all." I caught Jane's eye so I didn't pursue it. "What happened then. Exactly. We need the details."

Greg was concentrating, trying to remember,

"Well, he knelt down beside Frenchie and checked his pulse. He said he was still alive and told the other policeman to call for an ambulance. Then he said, 'Who did this?' and Frenchie muttered something but I couldn't hear what he said. It was then that Williams arrested me."

"What exactly did he say?"

"He asked me my name and I told him. Greg Baker. And then he asked me what I was doing there and I told him I had arranged to meet Frenchie there. Was that wrong?"

Jane butted in, "No. That was perfectly correct, Greg. That was the right thing to do. But did he read you your rights?"

"Oh, yes. He did everything right. And then he arrested me and said he would take me to the police station. He said he would stay there with Frenchie and told the other policeman to take me down to the car. We were waiting there when the ambulance came, and then a lot of other policemen with Inspector Holmes. He went up and the paramedics brought Frenchie down on a stretcher and took him away in the ambulance. After a while Williams and Holmes came down."

"Did he talk to you then?"

"No. He waited 'til we got the police station. He put me in an interview room and asked me. . ."

Jane interrupted; "Did he say you were entitled to have a lawyer present?"

"Yes, but I said I didn't need one because I didn't do it. I just wanted to say what had happened."

I was getting depressed by all this, "You waived your right to a lawyer being present at that point?"

Jane was getting pretty frustrated with him too, "Oh, Greg!"

Greg continued, "But it didn't really matter because before I'd said very much someone came in and told him that Frenchie had died. Then Holmes stopped me and said I was in a lot of trouble and he insisted I get a lawyer. That's when I called you." he said to Jane.

I nodded, "He insisted on it because he didn't want the case fouled up on a technicality." I turned to Jane, "Did they interview him then, when you were there."
