Book Murder at the Regal Hotel continued:
So I got into her car and she drove us to the Police Station at Whitchurch. As we went in through the front doors, Inspector Holmes was making his way across the hallway. He stopped when he saw us. Holmes is a good, very able, cop. A tall burly man with black curly hair, he keeps himself fit and would be a good ally in a difficult spot. The trouble is, too often we are on opposite sides, and then he's a tough opponent. He has not lost his Cardiff Splott accent and in that sense he and I have a strong affinity. But it doesn't stretch to being close buddies. On this occasion he wasn't pleased to see me
"Oh, it's you,"he growled. He looked at Jane, smirked and indicated me with a jerk of his thumb, "What do you want him for? Even a real detective wouldn't help Greg, let alone a joker like him. What Greg really needs is a psychiatrist. You could plead diminished responsibility."
Jane looked at him coldly although the effect was spoiled by the fact that, standing there in a black tailored suit and carrying a hardly-worn shiny black briefcase, she looked like a young graduate on her first job rather than a lawyer of some experience. She said in a voice like ice, "He is innocent until he's proved guilty. And besides it's quite unethical for you to discuss the case with the defence lawyer. And now I'd like to speak to my client."
Holmes shrugged his shoulders, smiled to himself and walked away. A moment later a constable came to show us the way to Greg's cell.
The sight of Greg, sitting there in his cell made me wonder, as I had done so many times before, how a girl like Jane could have a brother like him. She was pretty, lively, alert and intelligent, while he is tall, about five feet eleven or six feet, but gangly and gives the impression of his not being very strong. That is wrong. He works out regularly as part of his attempts to be good at his job. His blue eyes and dark hair seem to be the only likenesses shared between him and his sister. His slack jaw gave the impression that he was totally stupid. This wasn't quite fair, he was certainly no worse than average, but nevertheless the impression remained. When Jane and I got in to see him, he looked tired and in some distress, but then he had been up all night and, of course, he had been shocked by discovering the dead body of a man whom, it turned out, he had known as a work colleague. The cell he was in was pervaded by the typical prison smell of urine and disinfectant with a slight touch of vomit.
He was pleased to see Jane but less so to see me. He was still at the aggrieved stage after being arrested and locked up.
"Couldn't you get Sian Lloyd Evans to come?"he asked her.
"She wasn't in,"she replied, "Besides, Davy works for her and it's just as good to have him here to get the facts."
I didn't enlarge on the point that it was unlikely that Sian would ever take on a case which involved Greg Baker, especially as a defendant, because Greg was continuing, "Oh, all right, but this is a real bugger of a situation. It's going to take real brains to sort it out."He was implying of course that Sian had all the brains and I had none.
