Book Murder at the Regal Hotel continued:
"Yes." said Jane, "And they charged him with murder. They'll give me a transcript of the tape."
"I'd like to see that." I turned back to Greg, "Look, is there anything else you can tell me? Anything you can remember about Frenchie or what he was doing?"
"No, I've told you everything I know."
"Well, keep on trying, because at the moment things look pretty bad." I got up. "If you can think of anything, anything at all, that might help, you'll need it." I paused, "Oh, one thing more. Who called the police?"
He looked puzzled, "I don't know. Does it matter?"
"If you didn't call them it could be very important."
'I didn't' he said.
I went out and waited for Jane in the entrance. After a few minutes she came out. She was pretty angry.
"Why were you so negative? Are you going to help us with this or not?"
I was surprised at her lack of realism. "I doubt it. I know exactly what Sian will say if I tell her all this. Firstly, where will her fee come from and secondly what is there for us to do? All the evidence is there, and it's pretty clear."
"But he didn't do it. Didn't you hear him?"
"Yes, but that's not evidence, Jane, and you know it."
"Surely she'll help us. She's known me for ages."
"She's known you as a lawyer, not necessarily as a friend. Besides, she wouldn't help even a friend in a case like this."
"Well, it's up to you then, isn't it?"
"Up to me? How?"
"To talk her into it."
"What? No way!"
She caught hold of my lapel and looked at me, the pleading in her eyes.
"Oh, Davy, please! You must help. You know what will happen if he's convicted. He didn't do it, and at the moment I now it looks hopeless but if you get onto it you'll be able to find out the truth. You and Sian together."
"Thanks for the vote of confidence."
"You know what I mean."
"Let me get this straight. You want me to talk Sian into taking up a case which involves Greg, a man she had to sack for, . . well let's call it a less than adequate grasp of what his job meant. Who picks up a gun lying there next to a murdered man because he did an internet course on firearms, and he wanted to see what kind it was, and hasn't got a satisfactory explanation of why he was there.. I'm sorry to be brutal about it, but she'll be even more brutal, where she has apparently no guarantee of being paid . ."
She interrupted. "I'll pay her. I'll act for Greg anyway and I'll see that she'll be paid."
"How? You're not exactly a well established lawyer yet. You can't have that much money to spare and her fees are high."
"The next couple of cases I'll work for her for nothing." She really was desperate, "Please, Davy. Please talk to her."
"Look, I'll put the facts to her and see what she says. But that's all I can promise."
"Oh, thank you. I'm sure you can convince her."
"I'd better be getting back. She might be coming any time now."
"You haven't had any lunch. No wonder you're irritable, you're hungry."
"I'm not irritable." I snapped. It always irritates me when women tell me I'm irritable when I'm not. "But I am hungry."
"All right. I'll take you to McDonald's. That's your favourite place for lunch, isn't it?"
I took a deep breath. "No, not McDonald's today. Drive me back to the office, I'll just get a sandwich from Boots on the way."
