ORGANISING A WEDDING IN FRANCE, MARRIAGE PLANS IN FRANCE

My daughter's wedding might be 18 months away but her marriage plans for her wedding in France are well under way. Organising a wedding of this size needs almost military planning, accommodation needs to be organised, ferries booked and cars sorted for those who plan to fly in.

With 400 guests to seat, we are more disposed than any hotel to accommodate a marquee in our grounds. Lighting in the trees and down through the orchard and walnut grove with seating for people who want to break off from the main event for a quiet moment and I can arrange for our local farmers to sow sunflowers in our fields to give the whole wedding reception a stunning back drop.

The logistics of having 400 guests wandering round my grounds and in and out of my house will require some working out though. Parking for 150 cars in the bottom meadow won't be a problem providing it doesn't rain. If it rains we may have a problem. Then of course, it will also cause problems with people coming in and out of the house.

Eight toilets I am sure will be sufficient to cope with 400 guests even if they all have weak bladders. So we won't need to rent any portaloos. We have three kitchens, which should be enough to cope with the catering and safe storage of food. I can employ staff locally to handle the serving and clearing away - this is common practice around our way, and I know a number of excellent chefs to handle the cooking.

What I am hoping to achieve by investing a Marquee, chairs, tables and lighting now, is to make savings by using them again when my boys choose to get married. Not that I expect them to get married for some time to come but I am a hoarder and things like this can be packed into storage in the barns ready to be brought out at any time. I just wished I'd started planning for this years ago.

At the end of the day, my daughter will get the wedding that she wants. It is her day and whatever makes her happy will make me happy. However, just in case she decides to do it the way I suggest, I'm going to have the back garden landscaped this winter; it is after all, only money.
