NEW SEARCH ENGINE
New search engine, new idea, exciting concept, new search engine designed and built by a sixteen year old school boy set to become the next internet millionaire.
It's not often I get excited by a new business idea for the internet. I get approached to back all kinds of new
ideas and supposed exciting concepts and most fall short of the mark. Search engines are two a penny and business ideas for off the wall websites come even cheaper. So when I was
asked by a colleague to look at a
new meta search engine
that was looking for backing for future development, I did so with a certain amount of reticence.
After all, there are tens of thousands of search engines and meta search engines and most never get visited in a month of Sundays. This one, my colleague assured me was different for two reasons.
- The income was going to be generated through a number of sources but one was through pixel advertising.
- The second reason; it had been built by sixteen year old school boy, James Wildish
Now there is nothing new about pixel advertising; the million dollar home page website proved that money could be earned through this kind of advertising but the website had no other function than to sell advertising. It wasn't the first and certainly not the last, as the world and his dog jumped on the band wagon thinking they too would earn a million dollars. Of course they didn't and for a number of reasons; no one ever saw their websites and they, like the million dollar home page served no real purpose.
The million dollar home page although not original, was built by a twenty-one year old student to help page for his university fees and therefore got a lot of press and TV coverage and as a result, millions of visitors visited the site and many bought advertising. Therefore, advertisers were likely to get plenty of traffic through the site and prepared to pay for the pixel advertising. All the other websites that followed were simply a waste of cyberspace and anyone foolish enough to pay for advertising would have been extremely disappointed with the results. It wasn't the concept that made the million dollar home page a success; it was the PR and marketing.
Success on the internet requires enormous investment. It is not enough to have a good idea nor a unique concept, you have to have money to pay for marketing, advertising, PR and staff to handle and deal with the ongoing development. Plus you have to capture the imagination of your visitors to ensure they continue to return and use the site.
We back around one in three hundred new internet businesses that approach us. There are a number of reasons why this figure is so low. Sometimes it is because the business idea is poor, sometimes because we cannot see it making any money but usually it is because we are not impressed with the person pitching the idea; most of whom have done little or no research or put any form of business plan together.
There is a myth that all you need is a website and a good business idea and the internet will make you a millionaire overnight. The truth is that most internet sites, search engines and internet business ideas lose money because the people behind them are not business people. This is usually where we come in with the business acumen, experience, know how and money but we have to have faith in the person we are backing.
