3. PRIORITISING my list of debts

Firstly, says Alex Keen, you list all your PRIORITY DEBTS. Secondly, you list all your NON-PRIORITY debts. You might imagine that this has something to do with the amounts of money involved, but you'd be wrong. It's all about the SERIOUSNESS OF THE CONSEQUENCES you face.

Failure to satisfy priority creditors may lead to homelessness, imprisonment or being deprived of essential goods or services.

Conversely:
Non-priority debts are those where failure to pay will not result in the loss of your liberty, home or essential goods or services.

Tony Palmer looks at the prioritising of your debts in his Chapter 6, using a framework broadly similar to that used by Keen. Firstly keep up your mortgage or your rent to safeguard your home; keep up car payments in order to keep your job; pay the Council Tax to keep out of court; pay the gas and electricity to avoid disconnection (water is less of a problem).

In Managing Debt - A Guide for Older People, the matter is dealt with in Chapter 4 Prioritising Debts and Dealing with Emergencies where the warning is stark - pay the 'wrong' debt and you might find yourself losing your home.

Priority debts are ones which involve

  • Protection of your home

  • Staying out of prison

  • Protection of your health and well-being (gas and electricity can be disconnected; debts to family members can leave you isolated)

To prioritise your debts, make a full list of all your creditors and note what sanctions/legal action can be taken against you for recovery of the sum owed. Also note at what stage of recovery each debt is. Your debts should not be looked at in isolation from one another...
