ABOUT MORAIRA
Nestling between the towns of Calpe to the South and Javea to the North is the beautiful town of Moraira.
Once a small fishing village Moraira has now developed into a sophisticated modern town that benefits from an international community. Moraira has strict building regulations and comprises only low-rise structures, thus retaining its old Spanish charm with many of the original buildings still intact.
The 16th century castle commands a dominant position over the main beach and looks out to sea towards Calpe and beyond. This watchtower anticipated any possible invasions at that time from the Moors whom successfully invaded Spain and remained there for over 600 years. The Moors were responsible for the terracing of the hillsides, which enabled the growth of crops such as olives, citrus, almonds and grapes. This is still evident throughout Spain today.
A spectacular fiesta to commemorate the battle between the Moors and the Christians is re-enacted every June on the main beach in Moraira, and at the castle. Similar fiestas are held throughout many areas of Spain.
There are three sandy beaches, all blue flag, in Moraira. Ampolla is the main beach and
is ideal for all age groups due to its gentle gradient. It has a play area for children including climbing frame and volleyball net. A beach side restaurant provides wonderful snacks and tapas as well as fresh fish and paella and full waiter service. The small Platgetes beach is a short stroll along the Moraira coast road but take refreshments, as no facility is available.
The bay of El Portet, in Moraira, is a stunning sheltered sandy beach favoured by the locals. There are two beachside bar/ restaurants looking out across the bay.
Situated slightly above is a fine locally renowned restaurant called the Dauphin serving exquisite cuisine. The backdrop to this little jewel is one of exceptional villas with amazing views over the bay to Moraira, Calpe, Altea and inland to the Sierra Bernia Mountains. The bay regularly has an array of fantastic yachts and powerboats.
Moraira has a modern yacht club befitting an exclusive resort.
Moraira has a great deal to offer the discerning visitor. An abundance of fine restaurants, high quality shops, tapas bars and charm.
Surrounding the town of Moraira are beautiful villas, tastefully positioned amongst a landscape of vineyards and pinewoods. For the serious property hunter, Moraira offers an exclusive location. Couple this with the scenery, lifestyle, climate and the many prestigious properties that are available its no wonder Moraira is such a desirable place to live!
Moraira has a small fishing fleet and fish market. The surrounding areas leading to the inland area of Teulada offers undulating slopes covered with grape vines, almond, olive and citrus trees. The local grape yields a sweet wine called muscatel.
