It probably would have been much more effective, and certainly much quicker, if she used the internet for her research, but she had decided years ago, before the internet was developed, that she could do without a computer. If she ever needed something that could only be done on a computer, she asked me. I thought it wasn't part of my job description to help her with articles on Welsh dressers and so on, but she interpreted the catch-all phrase in my job description: ' and such other tasks which might reasonably be required,' as including everything she needed, including word processing, getting her lunch occasionally, taking her to the airport, and looking up material on the internet, even if it had nothing to do with the job.
I looked out of the window until she had driven out of the little car-park and then I followed. I locked the front door, went down the wrought - iron spiral staircase, and walked out onto Cathays Park Road, looking back at the office as I went. It had been the coach house or stable to one of the big Victorian houses on that road. Sian had had it renovated to make an office for this detective agency. It certainly looked good with the large window in the front and the carefully tiled drive.
Why she wanted it to be a detective agency is a long story. She seems the last person to be in the detective game, which is, after all, a pretty downmarket business. And nothing Sian does, or says, is downmarket. When I first asked her how she came to be the owner of a company like this, she told me she won it in a poker game. I didn't believe her.
I still don't. She's much too careful with money to play any gambling game with stakes that high. She also told me she saw it as an investment. She'd get it on its feet through hard work, and then sell it on at a profit. That's where I came in. I was responsible for the hard work to get it on its feet; the slow hard grind of being a detective; standing for hours in the rain, tailing people, checking through files and people's accounts, sometimes even dustbins, confronting debtors, meeting clients in strange places where they wouldn't be recognised. All this while Sian gave the orders, sent out bills and checked the accounts. Of course, giving the orders sounds easy, but in a detective agency working out the solutions to some of the problems, and then giving the right orders, can be difficult. That's where Sian comes into her own. She has an extraordinary way of analysing a problem, sifting the facts, getting them in order, and then solving it in her head in the minimum of time. I once suggested to her that it was 'women's intuition', but she flew off the handle at that. She thought that it supported a stereotype of women that she didn't like, all emotion and guesswork, and she made it clear that her success was due to nothing but detailed analysis and cold hard logic. There's no doubt she is a kind of genius and I feel lucky to be working for her - most of the time. She is very successful at the detective agency and is able to choose the cases she works on. So according to her, she should be able to sell it pretty soon.
