HOW TO MAKE MONEY FROM AFFILIATE MARKETING

How to make money from affiliate marketing, the best affiliate schemes, advice on how to increase sales through affiliate marketing, choosing the best affiliate networks

Generally speaking, people do not like to admit that advertising works on them (even if it does). For many people, admitting they visited a website or bought something as a result of an advertisement would feel like some kind of admission of weakness or gullibility. Crazy, but true.

If you don't believe me, here's a question for you. When did you last change the brand of washing powder you use purely because a TV advert told you that there was a new product that would get your whites whiter? I bet your answer is "never". And even if you have changed washing powder as a result of a TV ad, I bet you won't admit it.

AFFILIATE MARKETING

So, if something as blatant as a banner is an affiliate marketing no-no then what is the correct way to drive traffic to the website of your chosen merchants? The answer is by text links incorporated into reviews and recommendations.

Let's think about that for a minute. We've established that you wouldn't be so gullible as to change your washing powder just because a TV advert told you to. But have you ever bought a product or gone to, for example, a particular restaurant because some recommended you to? Of course you have. The recommendation might come from a friend or from a magazine or from a website. The point is that a referral or recommendation is far more effective than an advertisement.

THE BEST AFFILIATE SCHEMES

Bringing all this back to Mark and his fishing website, what we're talking about is that Mark should be doing two things (so far) to improve his affiliate marketing strategy. First he should be promoting something relevant to the theme of his website - for example fishing equipment. Secondly, he should be driving traffic to that relevant affiliate scheme by writing a brief review or recommendation of the chosen merchant, accompanied by a text link to their site.

Rule #3: Give buyers a choice
If you recommend just one merchant, then you are putting yourself in an all-or-nothing situation. The person reading what you have written will either like the sound of the product or merchant that you are endorsing, or they won't. If they don't like the sound of it, then you've lost them.

But if your affiliate site talks about two or three different merchants or products (all related to the theme and content of your site) then there is a much greater chance that your reader will visit at least one of the merchant's sites, even if they don't like what you have to say about your first choice merchant.

It's important to pick merchants with different strengths, so as your visitors can see some kind of logic as to why you are recommending different merchants for different situations.

HOW TO INCREASE SALES THROUGH AFFILIATE MARKETING

So, on Mark's fishing site, he could have a section that talks about fishing rods and then two or three single paragraph reviews, each one focusing on a different merchant and giving their pros and cons. He could explain, for example, that Merchant A has a very wide choice of fishing rods but is a bit more expensive than some other fishing tackle shops, whilst Merchant B is cheaper but only stocks two or three leading brands.

Rule #4: Stick to what you know (at least initially)
All the affiliate marketing tips we have talked about so far only really work if you know your subject and have used at least a couple of the merchants you are promoting.

A fake review where you are endorsing a supplier you have never bought from will stand out a mile and damage the credibility of your whole website.

Similarly, trying to generate a decent affiliate income advertising products or services in a sector that you know nothing about is a recipe for disaster for any newbie to the world of affiliate marketing.

If, like Mark, your hobby is fishing, then you should begin your affiliate career by focusing on merchants who sell fishing tackle, fishing permits, books on fishing, etc. By doing that, you'll find it much easier to write relevant content and articles for your affiliate website and you'll also increase the chances of being able to find merchants that you have already bought from yourself and hence can recommend convincingly.

CHOOSING THE BEST AFFILIATE NETWORKS

Rule #5: Go for pay-per-lead not pay-per-sale

Affiliate programmes fall into two broad types: those that pay you a commission whenever someone makes a purchase (for example if someone buys a dishwasher or a supply of vitamin tablets through one of your affiliate links), and those that pay whenever a sales lead is generated via one of your affiliate links (for example if someone requests a quote for a personal loan or home insurance)....
