We live in a world where the larger a company gets, the more pressure is put on the directors by shareholders to increase profits. This normally involves cutting costs and that usually involves cutting customer support. Call centres with queuing systems where you can wait for hours without talking to a human voice is just one example. Opportunities are lost to make additional sales because a client, who may have a problem gets frustrated and takes their business elsewhere. Just because a client has a problem or a complaint doesn't mean they cannot be satisfied and end up buying another product or service.

Many call centres are also outsourced overseas, so a client ends up talking to someone they don't know, doesn't have the power to make a decision and loses the customer as a client. Many large companies are now realising the stupidity of having moved their call centres overseas and are returning to the UK. These experiments have not saved them money, they have lost fortunes and alienated clients as a result. No company can survive long term without providing a personal service.

I never do business with any company that has a call centre and does not provide me with a direct telephone number and persons name and contact point. I would rather pay more and get service than be just another number where the company does not care about my needs. Furthermore, I believe there is a growing number of people who feel exactly the same.

KEEPING CUSTOMERS HAPPY

A few pages back we talked about the poor service we received from our bank leading to us moving to a competitor. It wasn't the high charges they were making that really irritated us, it was the refusal to provide the service we wanted. We simply weren't prepared to pay for something we weren't getting. We may not have been their biggest client but we certainly weren't their smallest and whilst moving accounts won't damage them financially, our guess is that this is happening all the time. One unhappy client may be a drop in the ocean, several thousand and it starts to bite.

The easiest people to do business with are existing happy clients, it is the most cost efficient way of doing business and when you have a strong customer base and are providing a high level of service, your profits continue to rise. You keep customers happy by adding value to your product, providing a first class service which means they have a point of contact who is easy to reach and you make them feel that you care. This is not about making a small client feel important, they will know where they stand in the scheme of things; it is simply showing a human side to your business and caring about their well being.

This doesn't have to cost you anything, in fact it will make your business more profitable simply because you retain your clients and they will be prepared to recommend you. When you have happy clients, they will trust you with all their business. We have clients ho started out small and using just one of our services.
