Book Murder at the Regal Hotel continued:
"Just before the police came, he picked the gun up."
As I expected she was scornful, "Doh! Hasn't he ever read any detective stories? Has he never seen police programmes on television, or seen films? What's wrong with the man? Who is it?"
I had to tell her, "Jane's brother, Greg."
There was resignation in her voice, "I might have known it. Of all the
bungleheaded . ."
"Yeah, I know. But that doesn't mean he did it. In fact I'm pretty sure he didn't."
"Why do you say that?"
"He doesn't carry a gun so where did it come from? Secondly, he says it was ten minutes at least after he heard the shot before he went in. If he had done it, he wouldn't have stayed there, he would have panicked and got away. "
"We've only got his word for that, that he heard the shot ten minutes earlier."
It was encouraging that she said, "We." "No, that must be right. How did the police get there so quickly. Someone heard the shot and called them. It wasn't Greg who called them. That will be confirmed when we find out who did call the police. and at what time."
"He didn't have to carry a gun. Perhaps the dead man had one and that was what he used. He took it off him in a fight. Who was the dead man, anyway. Anyone we've heard of?"
"One of Wyatt's men. Dubois." I pronounced it the French way, for her sake.
"Tell me what you know about him."
"Well, I really don't know a lot about him." I admitted. "I only met him once, I think. He worked for Y. Y. Wyatt. A fairly small, dark haired man, clean-shaven, given to using not very good Cologne. When I saw him he wore a double-breasted navy blue suit, a striped shirt with a white collar and a blue matching tie. His shoes were black and very shiny. They looked continental but I couldn't say why. People called him Frenchie because of his accent. Most of us thought he put it on to pull the birds."
She sighed, "You mean attract young women, I suppose. Will you never speak decent English?"
This was a subject we argued about repeatedly. "You can't preserve a language in aspic. If it's a living language it will change, and English is changing all the time. I use the common people's English, that's all. The vernacular is just as valid as your version."
"When we have time, I'll talk to you about that. In the meantime, is there anything else you want to tell me about this business?"
"I don't think so. Like I said, Jane hasn't got the prosecution's evidence yet."
"You did that deliberately, just to annoy me. Well, you won't succeed this time. Anyway, I'm too busy to take the case for Jane Baker. I have a big article to write for the Museum."
She was going to take the case. She was just telling me her price.
"O.K."I said, "What's the deal?"
"Deal?", she pretended innocence, "I'm too busy."
"What do you want me to do? What's the article about? If I help you with the research, will you take the case?"
