The Arts: |
Because of its beauty the area has attracted many artists and craftsmen, and there are numerous exhibitions and concerts throughout the summer. At Sarlat there is a theatrical festival in July and early August. (Ridley Scott's film The Duellists had most of its town scenes filmed at Sarlat, and the final duel takes place at the foot of Commarque castle itself). Sarlat also hosts a colourful market on Saturdays, and is filled with street performers at night. |

History and Prehistory: |
The Dordogne is steeped in history. It has many fine castles, most dating back to the middle-ages, and open to the public for visits. The area's prehistoric sites, including first-rate cave paintings, are well worth taking in, much of it close to "Les Granges". There are also many caves offering the visitor displays of magical stalagmites and stalactites. The towns and villages of the Dordogne are picturesque, and often unspoiled. The medieval city of Sarlat, and fortified towns such as Domme and Martel, are beautifully preserved. The region's capital, Perigueux, has Roman ruins, and there are countless small villages off the beaten track that have something to offer the visitor. |

Gastronomy: |

Sampling the local restaurants is another attraction of the area. Local specialities include duck, goose (including paté de foie gras), truffles, walnuts, cheese and other delicacies, and the fruit and vegetables are of the highest quality. Nearby towns have good wine merchants where you can buy inexpensive wine on tap, and from Bergerac (about 25 miles away downstream) to Bordeaux vineyards of high quality are legion. |
