Google Adsense * how to make money from Google Adsense * using your website to earn an extra income The first thing that's important to understand is that you should not have any kind of box or border around the AdSense adverts on your website. Having one is a classic way to show that the adverts are somehow separate from the main content of your page and hence draw attention to the fact that they are adverts. So, rule one is no borders. If your page has a cream coloured background then your adverts should have too. Making them any other colour will cause them to jump out and scream that they are an advert or something else somehow unrelated to the rest of the page. The final (URL) line of the advert should be set to a colour that blends in as closely as possible with your background colour, whilst still being legible. That's because you want to avoid drawing attention to the fact that clicking the advert will take people away to another site. The size, shape and placement of the adverts can make a big difference to your click through rate (CTR) as well. AdSense ads come in various predefined sizes and layouts and the classic error I see people make is to simply take a horizontal banner format and stick it at the very top or the very bottom of the page. Rather than doing that, you ought to be trying to place the adverts where they are more likely to be seen - and that means putting them "inline" (i.e. in with the main body text). That way you ensure that (a) anyone reading your page is bound to see the adverts and (b) they appear to be part of the site rather than something separate. It's also worth mentioning at this point that Google lets you choose whether to display text or image adverts. Personally I always opt for text ads as I find these have much better CTRs. The subject matter of the adverts is going to have a bearing on how much you earn too. This is because in competitive markets such as financial services or personal injury claims, advertisers will be paying much higher amounts per click than they will in less competitive or lucrative sectors. Of course, you can't really control the content of the ads because that will be determined automatically by the theme of your website. However, if you get to the stage where you are building sites specifically to impart useful information at at the same time earn money from AdSense then it is worth looking at whether you are able to provide decent content about some of the higher paying topics rather than focusing on things which are less competitive and hence ay out less per click.
