Google Adsense, contextual advertising, pay per click adverts and how to make money using Google Adsense

Google AdSense is one of the best known and widely used forms of contextual advertising on the internet today.

Contextual advertising is all about displaying adverts which are relevant to (i.e. in context with) the content of the page on which the adverts are appearing. So, for example, if contextual advertising were to be used on a web page that was about debt problems then you would expect the adverts to be focused on debt consolidation loans, debt counselling, debt management, remortgages, etc.

Because the adverts are closely related to the page content, there is a far greater chance that they will be relevant and of interest to the person reading that web page. Therefore, the adverts are far more likely to be clicked on.

Not only that, but whoever clicks on one of these adverts is likely to be a much warmer prospect for the advertiser than someone who, for example, clicked on an advert about debt consolidation whilst reading a page about mango chutney recipes.

Having established what contextual advertising is, let's look in more detail at how it applies to Google AdSense and how it can be a vital weapon in your internet money-making armoury.

PAY PER CLICK ADVERTS

We've talked elsewhere in this book about Google's pay-per-click advertising system (AdWords) and how website owners can use it to drive traffic to their websites. Well, when an advertiser signs up for AdWords they have the option of having their adverts displayed on Google's "content network" as well as, or instead of, down the side of the Google search results pages.

The content network is a rather grand name for all those websites which have signed up to the Google AdSense programme in order that they can show Google's contextual AdSense adverts on their pages.

CONTEXTUAL ADVERTISING

With a few exceptions, pretty much any website can sign up to AdSense. You can then pick from various ad formats (text, images, video, etc) and various sizes and layouts and display the Google ads on your site simply by copying and pasting a simple bit of JavaScript code (supplied by Google) into your web pages in the place where you want the Google ads to appear.

The vast majority of people who display AdSense ads on their sites quickly become despondent. This is because each advert click typically only earns a few cents and Google does not pay out to its AdSense publishers until their account balance reaches $100. For most publishers it can take a very long while to reach this target.

HOW TO MAKE MONEY USING GOOGLE ADSENSE

On the other hand, there are people like me who earn four figure sums from AdSense each and every month. And then there are those who claim to be earning tens of thousands of dollars per month.

To be successful in the world of AdSense there are two things you need. First off, you need a website that gets a decent amount of traffic. After all, with hardly any visitors you have hardly anyone likely to click on the adverts on your site.

Secondly, you need to present the AdSense ads in such a way as to maximise the chances of them being clicked on by visitors to your site. This does not mean putting great big arrows next to the adverts asking people to click them. In fact that kind of thing is against the terms and conditions of the AdSense programme. What you actually need to do is to make your ads as unobtrusive as possible.

If that sounds a bit odd, then let's just think back to the chapter on affiliate marketing where I said that banners do not work very well because they are easily recognisable as adverts and people have an inbuilt defence mechanism against clicking on adverts. The same thing applies with AdSense - if you make it obvious that they are adverts, then people are less likely to click them.

So that means that you need to take steps to ensure that the adverts blend in to the rest of your site. Google gives you all the tools you need to achieve this, but many people ignore them and so end up publishing their adverts in the default styles.
