- The first Gulf war, Yeltsin becomes Russian president, civil war in Yugoslavia begins. At Wimbledon Becker is runner-up in the singles for the second successive year.

- What half-century? Chaucer dies, Henry IV defeats the Percys at Shrewsbury, Agincourt is fought, Joan of Arc is burned at Rouen, Jack Cade's
rebellion takes place in Kent and London.
