Book Murder at the Regal Hotel continued:
Jane looked miserable, "I was hoping that it wouldn't get to jury. That the real murderer would be caught."
I shook my head, "With that kind of statement, the prosecution will just opt for Greg. Be honest, wouldn't you if you were in their position? Save the taxpayers' money with a quick and easy prosecution." I paused and looked at her, "Should you start looking for manslaughter, or self-defence if Frenchie pulled the gun on him?"
Jane set her face against that, "No. Greg said that he didn't do it. He's adamant that someone else did it while he was downstairs in the lobby. He's sticking to that, and I'll have to stick to it too."
I said, "All right then, but you may have to think about it sooner or later. Where do we start?"
She threw it right back to me, "Where do you think we should start?"
"Well, as I said, the first place to look is the last case he was working on. Didn't Greg say he was working on it too?"
"Yes, he said it was for a man called Evans. The police questioned him about it quite a lot."
"I suppose that's a good sign. They're considering all the other possibilities. Unless that's just Holmes being thorough. But if the police are looking at that, there's no point in us doing it too. We'd just get under their feet and they wouldn't thank us for it. What about the other case? The one Greg thought that Frenchie was investigating. The one he was doing on his own?"
"That's the trouble, Frenchie was doing it all on his own. Greg didn't know a thing about it."
"No name? Not what it might be about?"
She shook her head, "Nothing. Frenchie was playing it very close to his chest."
"Look, if you're the defence, can't you subpoena Wyatt's records and find out what it might be about?"
"If we want to subpoena records we have to know what we're looking for. Just a name might help but at the moment we haven't even got that. We can't just go through all his records on the off-chance we'll find something. That's a fishing expedition. A magistrate wouldn't give us a warrant for that. You need some kind of evidence to base a search on."
I was thinking. "Why don't you just ask Wyatt if he knows anything? After all, he ought to want the thing cleared up. It was one of his employees who was killed. He might know something and let us know, just to get the police off his back."
She looked doubtful so I said, "I'll tell you what. Sian should be back this evening. She usually gets back about ten o'clock from Newport. So we can call her about half past. Let's talk to her and see what she says."
Jane looked surprised, "Are you going to call her in the evening? On a weekend? She might have somebody with her."
I looked at her steadily, "Good. Then we'll interrupt them, won't we? When she's back, I'll call you and we'll go and see her together."
