"What's this?", she said without looking up. I put the paper on her desk in front of her. "My expenses for the Council Case". She glanced at it and saw the total. "Another work of fiction? You should take up writing novels - or newspaper reporting."
I was ready for her. "Every item is correct and I've double checked all of it."
She looked at me with those steel-blue eyes glinting. "Let's see."She started looking at each item. "Forty-five pounds for car hire? Why didn't you use your own car?"
"Because it's being repaired. As you know. You remember the taxi that ran into us when I met you at the airport?. When you were coming home from your holiday? It shouldn't really be a business expense." I emphasised it .
She ignored the accusation and continued. "Lunch, two pounds thirty. Where was that? "
"McDonalds"
She couldn't complain about the cost, so she found something else. "You shouldn't eat that kind of food. It's fattening. And you're quite fat enough as it is." Why is it that women think they can make personal comments about the men they know, even when they're not their husbands?
"A so-called healthy meal at a restaurant would cost a lot more."I told her.
"There are plenty of shops which sell healthy food. You can get some very good sandwiches; wholemeal bread, salad, tuna. It might do wonders for your waistline."
I shuddered, "I didn't have time to shop around."
"And I haven't got time to check this, either. Leave it with me and I'll settle it later."
She stood up, brushed down her dark green skirt and walked smoothly out, her deportment, as ever, perfect; her head held high and her shoulders back.
I looked at my watch. It was too early for lunch so she was probably going into the City Centre to the Library. Sometimes she would spend days at a time there. Cardiff's library had a great deal on Welsh traditional culture, the subject she was an expert in. She is very proud of her Welsh background and, being intelligent, literate and articulate, she is also successful in her researches on Welsh culture. She took a degree in Archaeology and Medieval studies at University of Wales, Lampeter and she writes articles for the Welsh Museum at St Fagans near Cardiff.
