Book Murder at the Regal Hotel continued:
I was just going on to the pavement on my way to the shops in the City Centre when a blue Ford Escort turned into the drive. The driver saw me and hooted. I turned back and saw that it was Jane Baker, the young solicitor who worked for Sian Lloyd Evans, and for the detective agency, when the occasion demanded it. Jane is younger than me - probably about thirty. Having graduated in law at 24 she optimistically went into business on her own and has struggled to keep her company solvent. She has been given some jobs by Sian and she has been found to be pretty good. She is single and lively, and both Sian and I like her - that is why Sian has been willing to help her. Jane is about five feet five inches tall with dark hair which is quite severely cropped, as befits a young professional woman who is interested in women's rights. At one time she toyed with the idea of calling herself Jo ( Her middle name is Josephine ) but I convinced her that it was too butch.
At this moment, as she got out of the car, she looked worried.
"Oh, Davy, I'm glad I caught you,"she said.
"You could have phoned,"I pointed out.
"Oh, no. I had to come as quickly as I could. And I was glad when I saw Sian drive off. It's you I want to see."
. "You'd better come in, and tell me what it is."
I unlocked the front door and we went in through the hallway, up the stairs and into the main office.
"I need your help. Yours and Sian's. It's about Greg."
"Well it's no use asking her Highness for another job for him," I said, "It wouldn't be any use. Not after the last time."
About a year earlier, Jane had talked Sian into giving her younger brother Greg a trial as an investigator but he had turned out to be totally useless. He was given the job of getting evidence for a divorce. Our client was a man who didn't trust his wife. Not only had Greg lost contact with the possible co-respondent he was supposed to be trailing, but he had ended up blurting out to the client's wife that she was being investigated and also the name of the detective agency he was working for. So he had lost the case, lost Sian her client and fee, and inevitably lost his job.
"No, it's not that. It's much more serious."She was clearly distressed. "He's been arrested. For murder!"
