Scammers, online scams and Internet dating predators advice and guidelines. How to recognise and protect yourself against dating scammers and internet predators.
Both men and women are vulnerable to dating scammers and Internet predators. Whilst we do everything physically possible, short of checking their backgorunds to protect our members, no system is full proof. Please read all our safety guidelines, use your common sense, be aware and alert to these people and report anything suspicious to us.
- Internet dating scams occur when a scammer, male or female, creates a false personal profile and makes contact with you online via email, or through a chat room. The scammer says that they are seeking romance but are really out to defraud you and steal your money.
- These Scammers sign up to free online dating agencies or chat rooms and because many online dating sites permit anyone to join and usually do not screen their members by taking their credit card details, this problem is rife on other sites.
- Scammers try to take advantage of the anonymity on other free dating internet sites to create the profile of someone who appears near perfect and make numerous false claims and promises to attract you and drop your guard.
- We have measures in place to prevent this but you are your own best protection.
- The scammer will either ask you for money, offer you money or ask you to cash a cheque.
- Normally they are patient whilst they build up a rapport and your confidence. No matter how convincing they are and this is why they are confidence tricksters, never part with money.
- If you receive a request like this through our website, please report it to us immediately.
- The scammer will eventually ask for financial help for any number of reasons. Normally, they will ask you to send money through an untraceable source such as Western Union or other telegraphic money transfer.
- The most common reasons they give for why they need your financial help include:
- They want to meet you but I don't have the financial resources to travel to see you
- They have a friend who owes them money and would like you to cash their cheque.
- They are seriously ill and need urgent medical treatment.
- They have been robbed and beaten, or a family member has been a victim of a serious or fatal accident and you are the only person who can help.
- They are related to an important and wealthy person who has just died and they need money to release the estate of the deceased.
- They are stranded abroad and I don't have money for travel or visa costs.
- No matter what the reason - DO NOT part with any money.
- Some of the most obvious things to look out for are:
- The member looks fabulous - the person may be genuine but could also be a scammer who has used a magazine picture
- The member is illiterate, plays on your religious beliefs or human kindness
- The member gives you a fictional address, PO Box number or phone number which he or she never answers and which does not have voicemail.
- Turns aggressive when you decline your help.
- He or she talks a lot about himself or herself but does not answer your questions. This is probably because they are sending standard response emails to hundreds of people.
- You can protect yourself by only use this dating site and follow our safety advice .
- Report anything suspicious.
- Be guarded and sceptical, no matter how sad the story and no matter how convincing, it will undoubtedly be a scam.
Most people are genuine and honest single people looking for love. Just be on your guard for the odd one who is not what they claim to be.
