Those most seriously affected are the old, infirm and those on a low income. Heating and food costs the same no matter how rich or poor you are; and there is no doubt that the government should takes steps to relieve the plight of the most vulnerable. However rising oil, petrol, electricity, gas and food prices should not really affect most people if they use their common sense.

It has long been known that overheated and double glazed properties are breeding grounds for germs and people who live in centrally heated homes where the thermostat is turned right up are more susceptible to colds and viruses than those that live in well aired houses and are not making their boilers work over time.

A cooler environment where windows are left open makes the body work and do the things it has learned to do over thousands of years of evolution. Overheating your home and keeping the windows closed creates an unhealthy environment and unhealthy people.

Not turning the heating on at the earliest point in the year, keeping the thermostat turned down to a minimum and wearing warmer clothing and keep active around the house will not just reduce your heating bills down to affordable levels, it will make you a healthier person too.

This is particularly applicable to children who are growing up in environment where their bodies do not learn to function as they should. It means that their immune systems do not learn how to work and are in no position to fight off the viruses and bugs that are happily breeding in the warm air.

Fat and overweight children are sitting in front of the television or their computers without feeling the need to get up and do some activity to get the blood circulating. Their obese parents are doing more or less the same thing; their bodies just go into meltdown and don't feel the need to do anything strenuous. As a result, their bodies fail to function at a level necessary to remain fit and healthy. Maybe the cost of rising oil prices will create a situation where they have no choice but to follow this advice and they will not revert back to lazy and slovenly habits when fuel costs are cut.

There will of course be people who will argue that they should not have to reduce the temperature in their homes. This is true of the old and inform but the fatties of this world have got to face up to the fact that there is no excuse for being fat and lazy and that their lifestyle is not healthy. Fit slim people do not feel the cold like overweight and lazy people and will not be complaining as loudly and calling to cut oil costs.

A cooler home is a healthier home and doctors surgeries will empty as those people who are constantly down the doctors because they have a cold or off work because they have a mild virus will feel healthier. This again will have a positive affect on the health service and we should see productivity increase.

A few years from now statisticians and economists will look at this period in our social history and attribute the rise in productivity and reduced pressure on the health service to the rise in fuel prices.

Admittedly, this is going to take some time to get used to. The normal whiners will complain that they shouldn't have to lower their thermostats and cycle or walk to work; how long they will continue to whine will depend on how quickly their bodies and minds adjust to a healthier lifestyle.

However, turning your thermostat down is not the only way you can cut your fuel bills.
