Book Murder at the Regal Hotel continued:
I got into the office on Monday morning at 7.15 but as usual Sian was there before me. She didn't comment on the fact that I was an hour earlier than my terms of employment required.
Before I went in to see her, I checked the fax machine. I read the article that Bill had sent me, picked it out of the machine and I must have been smiling when I opened the door and went in.
"You're in a good mood," she said. "Anything good?"
"I doubt if it's anything to do with this case," I warned her, "But it's certainly something you'll find interesting. It's an article in the South Wales Echo about four years ago. Only it never got printed because they needed the space for stories about the General Election. They only printed as very much shortened version. It's better if I read the long version for you. You'll find it interesting."
"All right, read it to me." She sat down.
I read it out, "Peter Allen Maybury and Sydney Ivor Williams, both described as unemployed, of Tiverton, West Midlands, were yesterday convicted of theft. They had originally pleaded not guilty, claiming that a small stone statue of the Virgin Mary, found in their possession, was from St Saviour's Church, Cefn Mably. In their original statements they had claimed that the statue had been found behind an old wall in the church during repair work, and that the vicar had asked them to find a buyer for it. In fact, the vicar, the Reverend David Mays, gave evidence that there had been some repair work being done at the church, but that no statue had been found there. He denied ever seeing the two men or the statue. Police evidence showed that the statue, dating from the twelfth century, had in fact been stolen six months earlier during a burglary at a Roman Catholic convent in Ripon in Yorkshire. Later, the two men changed their plees to Guilty and yesterday they were sentenced to two years imprisonment each. Charges against a third man, Henry Victor Smethhurst, of Cardiff, of receiving the stolen statue, were dropped by the prosecution."
Sian sat back, her fingers intertwined behind her head. "Why did you think that would interest me?" She smiled.
"Because I've read your thesis." I replied and pointed to the book on her coffee table. "It's your Ph. D thesis and you tell the story about how a genuine twelfth century French statue was found behind a wall in a very old church in Herefordshire. Your thesis lists a large number of examples of French religious statues, that was your research topic, and you were asked to help in proving the statue was authentic."
"Yes. I didn't know you'd read that, Davy. There was also a document, written by the parish priest in 1640 saying that he was hiding the statue because he was afraid that Cromwell's army would find it and destroy it. That document too was authenticated. For a research student it was a real scoop." She frowned, "But why have you got that now?"
