Book Murder at the Regal Hotel continued:

"Yes!" Jane was looking much more hopeful now.

Sian carried on, ignoring the interruption, 'The third possibility is that he didn't say 'Greg' at all, but the policeman simply misheard him. He said something else, sounding similar to 'Greg'."

"Well," I said without optimism "We know what the Defence Counsel can say, but in the meantime we've got to find another possible suspect. All those points in a closing argument won't be very strong unless we can point to a credible alternative. Which leads us back to the cases that Frenchie was working on. Both of them. The one that Greg was working on as well, and the other one, that Greg thought he was doing secretly."

Sian asked, "Was it secretly?"

"Yes, " said Jane. "Greg thought that Frenchie was doing something else. Something he was keeping secret from Wyatt. He thought that's what Frenchie wanted to talk about in the hotel."

Sian's brain started working, "Why arrange it with such secrecy? Why not meet in their office? Or in a café? That suggests Dubois didn't want Wyatt to know he was looking into it. He wanted to keep it secret from Wyatt himself. Perhaps something to do with another case going on in the office, but that Frenchie himself wasn't assigned to."

I put a spoke in, " That doesn't automatically follow. There might be other reasons for Frenchie to want to keep it from Wyatt. Maybe he was just moonlighting."

Sian agreed, 'Yes. That's quite possible. But we have to start somewhere and this would give us a line to start on. Let's assume that Dubois was looking at one of the current cases that Wyatt's office was handling, a case being dealt with by another employee. That there was something about it that made him suspicious. And then he wanted to talk to Greg about it. It's a possibility and without anything else, it's a starting point for us. How many people does Wyatt have working for him?"

"About five, I think. Greg, Frenchie and perhaps three or four others. And of course Mandy, his secretary, works there too."

"We need to find out what each of them was working on and then see why it would make Dubois so suspicious he would feel he needed to investigate it and fix up a clandestine meeting with Greg." She finished her drink and got up, "I can leave that to you, can't I?"

"How do I do that?" I asked.

"I'm sure you'll think of something," she smiled, "I'll come and see you out." So we left.
