BUSINESS NETWORKING SEARCH ENGINE
Business networking search engine, launching a new business using social networking, pixel advertising and PPC to give you a quick start
The list of internet businesses and companies that David and I have backed and/or helped launch over the years is simply too long to list and would make pretty boring reading anyway. You would only have come across some of these companies if you were interested in a particular market or product or working in a specialised line of work.
However, if you use the search engines for almost any reason, the chances are that you will have landed on one or more of our sites or used software developed by us to find what you were looking for. Who knows: you may even be a client without knowing it.
You may even have been reading The Golden Web and thinking that everything we say makes sense, but wondering are these guys the successful big players they are making themselves out to be?
We could list all our business interests and let you scroll down the list trying to find the odd website or internet company that you recognise or we could simply mention one word -
Boogami because if you haven't used this search engine or even heard of it, you must have been living on a desert island.

Fantastic business idea
Boogami first hit the headlines in August 2008 with massive press and media coverage. It is the search engine built by the then sixteen year old school boy James Wildish. James had built the search engine to help his dad pay off his mortgage, but like every other internet entrepreneur he found that building the search engine was one thing whilst making money from it was something totally different.
There is no disputing that James is a highly intelligent, clever and extremely motivated young man. What he built was something absolutely fantastic but there are tens of thousands of search engines that have been built by internet companies hoping to usurp Google and Yahoo and most of them never get so much as a visitor. This is an important lesson that David and I have driven home throughout this book.

BUSINESS NETWORKING
James knew he had a good business idea. This wasn't just a website selling pixels: this was a search engine that could compete with Google especially as he planned on adding a business networking section to it. But James knew he needed backing to get the business off the ground. He would later learn that he didn't just need backing to get Boogami discovered by the public; he would also need investment to keep the business developing or it would implode.
So James and his dad went off to their bank to speak to a specialist business advisor. It is the only decent piece of advice that I have ever heard of a bank giving any client because the bank took one look at his search engine and told him he needed specialist backing and recommended that James and his dad got in touch with us.
David took the initial enquiry and having spoken to both James and his dad he emailed me to ask me to have a look. My initial reaction was "not another bloody search engine" until I read the bit about it having been built by a sixteen year old schoolboy to help pay off his dad's mortgage.
The UK and USA were going through a credit crunch, and mortgages were proving to be a major problem for many property owners as interest rates were rising and new mortgages had become all but impossible to obtain. Teenagers with ASBOs hanging around on street corners drinking cheap cider, and knife murders, filled the news virtually every day. Yet here was a teenager who had come up with an idea to help his dad and this was a story that the press and Government were going to jump on. What's more, James wasn't some stay-at-home little geek that epitomised any kid with an interest in computers; James was a talented county athlete as well.
SEARCH ENGINE
The initial search engine worked pretty much the same as any other search engine and James's idea was to sell a million pixels that were to appear on the home page. James's technical skills were obviously excellent and way beyond the capabilities of any sixteen year old but he needed backing and the expertise of experienced internet businessmen to make the money he hoped to earn.
It was obvious to all of us that his initial ambitions to earn a million pounds were just a fraction of how much he could earn if the business was launched and managed properly. To make the pixel advertising really pay dividends for the advertisers, Boogami had to continue to develop to keep users coming back to use the search engine. This is why the social networking section was so important. Get the members and you have the users.
