Book Murder at the Regal Hotel continued:

I stared at Jane. "Murder? Don't be ridiculous. Greg couldn't commit a murder!"

"I know that. I'm glad you think so too, but the police think he killed a man."

I didn't tell her that it was my opinion that Greg couldn't commit a murder, not because he was too kind or too gentle or too noble, but because he was just incapable of any crime that required direct action.

"Tell me what happened, then."

"About six o'clock this morning I had a phone call from the police at Whitchurch Station".

"Whitchurch? Who's the Inspector there?"

"Holmes. Steven Holmes."

"Ah. Old Sherlock."

Inspector Stephen Holmes hated it when I called him Sherlock. So I did it as much as possible, when he and I crossed paths, just to annoy him. He took the view that a private detective's job was to stay out of the way, or to work for the police for nothing, whereas I take the view that a private detective's job is to work for himself - or at least for his boss. So naturally, we often had a difference of opinion.

"Greg was in custody. It was his one phone call so he phoned me. I'm his lawyer as well as his sister. So I went to see him."

"Is he actually charged or just held?"

"Actually charged. Holmes says it's cut and dried."

"What does Greg say? Did he say he did it?"

"No, he denies it completely. That's why I know he's not guilty. He wouldn't lie to me. I'm his sister."

Sometimes I felt sorry for her, being so innocent; much too innocent to be a lawyer. But other times I was just irritated by her gullibility. This was one of those times.

I took a deep breath, "If Greg didn't do it, why should Holmes say it's cut and dried? Whatever else he may be, Holmes is a very good copper and he's not a fool."

She paused before replying as if she knew what she was going to say was going to make things difficult. Then she said, very hesitantly, "Because one of his sergeants found Greg with the body. And the gun."

"Greg was there, with the victim?"

"Yes, he was still in shock at finding the body."

I stared at her. "You'd better tell me everything."

"I'd rather you heard it directly from Greg. Can you come across to Whitchurch now."

"Well, the boss is out for the moment. And I don't think she'll be back for a couple of hours. If we go now and we're quick, it might be all right."
