BLOGGING TO INCREASE VISITORS AND IMPROVE TRAFFIC

Blogging to increase visitors and improve traffic * using blogging as an online marketing tool * SEO blogging techniques and search engine optimisation

David was supposed to write this chapter as he has a greater knowledge on the subject of blogging than I have. However, when push came to shove, the job landed on my desk. Neither of us has yet to be convinced that blogging used as an SEO technique is all that it is cracked up to be. And we have yet to see proof that it will significantly increase your visitors or improve traffic levels to your website. At the end of the day, an entrepreneur has to decide how best to devote his or her time. It isn't just how hard you work but what you actually do that will make you money.

SEO BLOGGING TECHNIQUES

One of the things that many SEO firms claim is that inbound links are important. Many search engine optimisers are now preaching that SEO blogging is the way forward. The question I have to ask is - Why would a blog do any more to increase visitors than a page or two of good quality content. I received the following email from a colleague the other day.

"We have been partnering 2 SEO firms in Brighton recently, both of whom say that inbound link building is the single most important factor for search engine listings. So get blogging!"

BLOGGING TO INCREASE VISITORS

I remain unconvinced that blogging will increase visitors for the following reasons. I typed - search engine optimisers in Brighton - into Google.co.uk and we owned the websites holding the top eight positions. Not the companies my colleague was telling me were SEO whiz kids. Even more amusing is the fact that I am based in Bordeaux and not Brighton.

Now I am always prepared to bow my head in deference to someone with superior knowledge to myself, but I do want someone who makes a statement of this nature to provide me with some proof. As the two SEO firms in question are based in Brighton and we have offices all over the UK and Europe (although I do visit Brighton from time to time) are they right or wrong? Or am I wrong and, if so, shouldn't someone tell Google.

I rarely see blog pages come up in the top ten of Google for any commercial searches that I make. I have no interest in reading someone else's blog; why should I? And I remain unconvinced that the type of people that I do business with have either the time nor the inclination to sit and read someone's blog.

IMPROVE TRAFFIC

The problem is that most people read something written on a website and take it as a fact without actually testing or researching if the theory is right. Why does blogging improve traffic levels to a website? These theories spread like a religion with every naïve person jumping on the bandwagon and banging the drum - like the colleague who sent me the above email.

So whilst I am not an expert on blogging, I can give you some general advice based on my own research and logical approach - which is how I approach all aspects of the internet.

BLOGGING AS AN ONLINE MARKETING TOOL

It is probably a good idea to have a blog on your website as an online marketing tool; providing you do three things. Keep the content related to your business and of a high enough quality that people stumbling across your blog feel that the visit was worthwhile and therefore maybe leave comments of their own.

New business ideas

Keep adding to the content so that visitors feel that the blog is worthwhile bookmarking so that they continue to revisit your site. This means that you have to set aside time everyday or week to ensure the information is fresh. David and I have tried this but to be honest neither of us have even a few minutes in a day to regularly update it. It is not high on our list of things we must do.

SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMISATION

You can use a blog as part of your search engine optimisation but monitor the traffic to your blog pages and check to see if any visitors actually turn into paying customers. Give it time but don't keep flogging the horse if the barn door is closed and it isn't drinking from the trough. You get my drift?
