BLOGGING TO INCREASE TRAFFIC TO A WEBSITE

Blogging to increase traffic to a website * blogging to improve visitors as an SEO technique * can blogging help you make more sales?

There are highly visited free blogging sites that you can also use to set up a blog and add links to your site. These sites may be highly visited but that does not mean that people are going to visit your blog and therefore will not increase traffic to your website. SEO experts will tell you that a link from a high traffic website will help your page rank. However, these are the same SEO experts who will tell you to start blogging. They are also the same SEO experts who visit our website and then send out spam and plagiarise our content by adding articles to their own websites about what we have published.

BLOGGING TO INCREASE TRAFFIC TO A WEBSITE

The problem is that we don't actually publish how to put our findings into action so the content is worthless. It's a bit like saying "to remove the tumour, remove the top of the scalp and cut away at the tumour until it is all removed but be careful not to cause irreparable brain damage." Sounds fairly simple but who would be stupid enough to actually attempt it without knowing what they were doing? Don't answer that. There are most likely some SEO experts working on that right now.

I do not believe that blogging will increase traffic to a website in any significant levels to make the time and effort either economic or profitable. I honestly believe that if we published a page saying that using the colour green in website design would help your page rank there would be emails winging around telling everyone to change the colour of their website. Such is the nature of the beast.

New business ideas

I have spoken to a number of website owners recently who rather than pay a search engine optimiser to reconstruct their website for the search engines have spent hours writing blogs on their own site and other sites. In the final analysis, when asked how much traffic levels had improved and how many sales this had culminated in; it turned out they were all working for pennies per hour.

BLOGGING TO IMPROVE VISITORS

Why someone would be prepared to work for a few coppers an hour rather than invest in professional SEO beats me. This is not saving money; it is losing sales and a particularly ludicrous past time. None of these website owners now believe that blogging will improve visitors.

The next thing you have to ask is: what type of people have the time to visit and read other people's blogs and are they the type of people who would actually buy from you? Let's face facts: there are hundreds of thousands of bloggers out there, all busy writing about what they had for lunch and where they went last night. Who actually has the time to write this crap and who has the time to sit and read it all?

It may be true that some of these blogs get tens of thousands of visitors, but I have no interest in attracting shit traffic to any of our websites. We get enough enquiries from nutters and time wasters without doing anything to encourage more of them.

BLOGGING AS AN SEO TECHNIQUE

I would love someone to prove me wrong and show me that blogging is an effective SEO technique. But before you wing off an email telling me I'm an idiot, make sure you can prove your findings. Simply quoting figures and statistics at me proves nothing. I want to see your stats report, sales figures and show me where your website appears at the top of Google for a sensible and competitive search term. If I'm wrong I will happily become a blog convert and dedicate the rest of my life to writing shite that twats want to waste their life reading.

So my advice is to try blogging and monitor the results. Don't spend hours doing it because you are in business for profit and internet sales are made by spending your time doing things that are proved to work.

CAN BLOGGING HELP YOU MAKE MORE SALES

Personally, I think you are far better off joining busy business forums and building up a relationship with the members. If you are looking for advice, they can be useful but do your own research. I am a member of one forum where SEO experts expound ridiculous, unproven theories that can cost non savvy forum members time and money. People who go onto forums giving advice are often either looking for business or don't have any work and therefore plenty of time to waste. If someone tells me a fact I don't know about the internet; I want to be shown proof. Then I will do my own research to ensure it is factual.

So, can blogging help you make more sales through your website? Maybe, but the time and effort involved could almost certainly be employed in other more productive and profitable SEO strategies.
