Assessment, habitat creation and long-term monitoring of Lesser Horseshoe Bats
Client: Bellway Homes Year: 1996 – present Primary Species/Habitats Assessed: Lesser Horseshoe Bats The site comprised a large derelict building formerly used as a workhouse with associated ancillary buildings, hard standing and former grounds. The site is proposed for residential housing and gardens. ecosulis ltd have been involved with the ecological aspects of the site since 1996 following anecdotal information held by the local records office of ‘large bats flying from Hamdown House’. Other information obtained was of verbal reports of flying bats and of bats hanging from the ceilings inside Survey work undertaken by ecosulis ltd found evidence for the presence of a maternity roost and winter hibernation roost for Lesser Horseshoe Bats. Following these findings, a detailed mitigation strategy was compiled to include replacement roost sites, appropriate landscaping, long term monitoring programme and management plan. Two compensatory roost sites have been created and there is evidence of use of these roosts by bats. Under a licence from Defra, all of the buildings have been demolished and work is underway on the construction of new housing. |
