AFFILIATE NETWORKS AND AFFILIATE PROGRAMMES
Affiliate networks and affiliate programmes, making money online through affiliate merchants, networks and programmes, follow our rules to ensure the best results
Some affiliate networks will quote earnings-per-click figures for each merchant and these will give you an idea of which merchants offer the best conversion rates. But as with so many things in the world of making money online, there is no substitute for doing your own experimentation and trying out different merchants until you find the one that works best for you and your website.
Rule #7: Look for high-volume-low-payout affiliate schemes
This is really the only logical conclusion you can come to if you follow Rule #5 and Rule #6. As an example, let's look at personal loans.
AFFILIATE PROGRAMMES
Most affiliate programmes for loans pay per lead rather than per sale. There are some that pay per sale, but if you have followed the advice in Rule #5 then you won't be looking at those.
Within the pay-per-lead side of things, there are two types of loans you can promote: secured loans (where the debt is secured against a property and which are therefore only available to homeowners) and unsecured loans which are available to both homeowners and tenants.
A secured loan might well earn you £75 per lead or more. An unsecured loan will typically be more like £5 per lead.
But...
- There is far more demand for unsecured loans than there is for secured loans
- Unsecured loans are quicker and easier to apply for
- The criteria for what constitutes a valid secured loan lead are much stricter than those for an unsecured loan lead
As a result, you are likely to find it much easier to generate high volumes of unsecured loan leads than you are to generate lots of secured loan leads. Plus, your unsecured loan leads are less likely than your secured loan leads to be rejected as invalid by the merchant.
MAKING MONEY ONLINE THROUGH AFFILIATE MERCHANTS
Rule #8: Get as much traffic to your site as you can as cheaply as possible
If you've managed to get this far, then I shouldn't need to tell you that an affiliate site that gets no visitors is not going to make you much money.
To get traffic to your site you can use search engine optimisation, pay-per-click advertising, article writing, blogs, or some combination of these.
I'm not going to go into great detail on these techniques here, because each one has its own separate chapter in this book already. What I will say is that whichever method(s) you use to drive traffic to your affiliate site, it is important that you do have a clearly defined traffic generation strategy and that you have properly researched reasons for choosing a particular internet marketing strategy for your site.
Rule #9: Analyse your performance
In order to know what's working and what isn't in terms of your affiliate marketing strategy, you need to make use of all the statistics and analytics that are available to you as an affiliate.
One of the great things about doing business in the virtual world is that you can make changes and experiment with new techniques very quickly and with minimal lead times. But that's of little use if you don't follow it through by analysing the results of your experiments.
AFFILIATE NETWORKS
Most affiliate networks provide very comprehensive tools for checking how your affiliate programmes are performing. For example, by setting up tracking codes you can see which of your websites (or even which individual pages) are generating the most clickthroughs to the merchant's site and which are generating the most sales and commissions.
Some networks provide better statistics reporting than others, and this may be a factor in deciding which affiliate networks you want to use (see Rule #10)....
