AFFILIATE NETWORKS, AFFILIATE MERCHANTS AND SCHEMES
Affiliate networks, affiliate merchants and schemes, help and advice in choosing the best affiliate networks and schemes and how to become a top affiliate merchant
If you are using Google AdWords or other pay-per-click advertising systems to drive traffic to your affiliate website, then it is even more important to have as much reporting information as possible so as you can make sure that you are getting maximum value for every pound you spend on PPC. You can turn off an unsuccessful AdWords campaign instantly and thus save yourself wasting huge amounts of money. But you'll only know it is time to do that if you take the trouble to analyse your affiliate statistics and so spot problems as soon as they occur.
AFFILIATE NETWORKS
Rule #10: Know your networks
Choosing the right
affiliate networks
can make a big difference to the success if your affiliate campaigns. It is free to join the networks as an affiliate, so you may as well join as many as you can. But you'll probably find after trying them out that there are only two or three that you will want to focus most of your efforts on. Which two or three those are will vary from one affiliate to another.
Some affiliate networks are quite general whilst others specialise in particular sectors such as finance. Some are used by small merchants whilst others tend to attract more of the household name merchants.
AFFILIATE MERCHANTS
There are affiliate networks which let any affiliate join any merchant's programme. Then there are others where merchants are able to manually approve and vet each affiliate before they are allowed to start promoting that merchant.
Different networks allow different time periods for merchants to cancel commissions if they deem a transaction to be invalid. This time period can range from five days to a month or more. And I know of at least one network which gives different cancellation limits to different merchants within the network.
This cancellation period is an important thing to consider when trying out new affiliate programmes, especially pay-per-lead ones. If a merchant is allowed 30 days to cancel a lead, you could potentially generate a large number of leads and spend a lot of money on pay-per-click advertising before you find that your efforts have proved unsuccessful and unprofitable because the merchant has left it to the last minute to cancel a whole batch of your leads.
AFFILIATE SCHEMES
Here are some of the affiliate networks you ought to be joining.
Affiliate Future
This is a big network with a wide range of big-name and small merchants and lots of merchants from the travel industry in particular. They've got pretty good reporting and a nice short cancellation window of just five days. You can join any programme you like without having to wait for the merchant to approve your application.
Affiliate Window
This is another big network with fairly comprehensive and easy to use reporting tools. Most merchants can be joined immediately without having to wait for your affiliate site to be approved.
Webgains
This is a less well-known affiliate network but, in my opinion, one of the best. They've got a good choice of merchants from a range of sectors and their reporting tools are extremely comprehensive. They are also the only network I know of which pays its affiliates on a weekly rather than monthly basis, subject to a minimum threshold of £20.
Tradedoubler
This affiliate network has lots of well-known merchants but some of them have to approve your site before you can start earning commissions. This is a drawback if you want to get up and running quickly as some merchants take a long while to process applications from affiliates.
Commission Junction
A huge network this one. I find their reporting extremely cumbersome and this is another network where a lot of the merchants have to approve each application. They do however have probably the biggest share of big-name merchants so if you want to promote household names then you are almost certainly going to have to join Commission Junction.
OMG
A good choice of merchants here, although lots of them do manual approval of affiliates. There are merchants from most sectors but with an emphasis on finance and insurance companies. This means there is a fair bit of scope for finding pay-per-lead affiliate programmes here.
e-financial affiliates
There are only a handful of merchants in this network but, as the name implies, nearly all of them are financial services companies. This means that this network is a good place to look if you want to focus on pay-per-lead and if you are interested in promoting loans, mortgages, bank accounts, debt management, etc. Most merchants can be joined without having to wait for approval.
Smart-Quotes
This is another smaller network focusing on the finance and other pay-per-lead industries. Poor reporting tools and lack of communication with affiliates let them down though.
CHOOSING THE BEST AFFILIATE NETWORKS AND SCHEMES
In summary, if you follow the above ten rules then you have a good chance of earning money from affiliate marketing. As we've said elsewhere in this book, the trick is not to try to find one killer affiliate scheme that pays you thousands of pounds a month. Instead you should use the techniques outlined above to help you build up smaller amounts of revenue from a number of different affiliate programmes.
Aim to earn something achievable like £30 per affiliate programme per month. Aim to get two such schemes up and running each month by using the rules we talked about just now. At the end of year one, that would give you an income going forward of £720 per year. After another year, if you keep on adding two affiliate programmes per month, you'll be earning nearly £1500 per month from these passive income streams from then on. Obviously, the more schemes and the faster you add them, the more money you will earn. What we are trying to do is show you how to make achievable incomes with realistic targets.
Above all, if anyone tells you they have found a single affiliate scheme that pays them five figure sums each month and means they can lie on the beach all day, don't buy their e-book that tells you how they did it - instead just walk away!
An easy way of setting up a website that is going to get the traffic you need to generate affiliate income is to use
