To make purchases from the catalogue, you had to open an account - thus enabling you to buy items on the never-never. But once you had an account you could also act as an agent for the catalogue company and could offer your friends the chance to buy goods from your huge catalogue of delights. As an agent you would earn a commission on any sales that you introduced in this way. HOW TO MAKE MONEY ONLINE UTILISING AFFILIATE MARKETING The principal of modern day internet affiliate marketing is exactly the same. The only slight differences are that the agents are now referred to as affiliates, the catalogue companies have been replaced by so-called merchants, and there are now a staggering array of merchants to choose from rather than the handful of home shopping catalogue companies that were around prior to the birth of the world wide web. So, how does affiliate marketing work today and how can you have a chance of making money from it? The first thing you need to do is choose one or more merchants to promote and sell on behalf of. Whereas the 1970s housewife only had to choose from the Littlewoods catalogue, the Kays catalogue and a handful of others, as an internet affiliate you will have access to thousands of different merchants across sectors as diverse as arts & crafts, travel, financial services, home & garden, health & beauty and many, many more. Some of the merchants will be big name companies that are household names - the likes of Marks & Spencer, PC World, HMV, Tesco, etc. Others will be smaller, niche retailers that you may never have heard of before. These are often the best merchants to promote, but how do you find them if you have never even heard of them? AFFILIATE MARKETING NETWORKS This is where affiliate networks come in. An affiliate network brings together a large number of merchants under one online roof. You can go to an affiliate network's website and browse through a whole directory of different merchants and pick the ones that you want to promote. As I said just now, some will be big name merchants that you are already familiar with and some will be much smaller players....
