If I were to pinpoint any reason for my personal success on the internet, I would say it was other people. I have surrounded myself with the best people I could find and who are specialists in their own fields. It is their combined knowledge and expertise and my faith in their abilities that enables me to concentrate on the few things that I do well. Working with them has enabled me to get a basic understanding of some of the aspects of their particular fields; but I am not a designer or programmer and would not attempt to do any of the jobs my business partners handle. Nor have I any desire to do so as I believe trying to become a jack of all trades would diminish my own abilities. I put my faith and trust in David to do his job and in the numerous other partners involved in our business to do theirs. This enables me to concentrate on my specialist areas without having to worry about what is happening elsewhere within the company.

I would recommend anyone looking to start an internet business to do the same. If you are good at one particular thing, concentrate on becoming the best in your field. I come across website designers who do a bit of programming, claim to be search engine optimisation experts and manage various other internet related services for their clients. In reality, they don't do anything very well and they end up losing their clients to my company because the client can talk to someone who specialises in one thing and is damned good at their job.

UNDERSTAND HOW THE INTERNET WORKS

Find people who really know what they are doing and involve them in your business at the highest level. Don't be a control freak and afraid to delegate responsibility for the tasks you can't do or understand. A one man business is a one man band; you are trying to do so many jobs that nothing gets done properly, nothing gets finished, you will make mistakes, quality will suffer and you will end up exhausted.

A successful business is like an orchestra, with members all playing one instrument, in tune and in harmony with one person conducting and controlling the whole business. Everyone starts a job and finishes on time and the results are far finer and therefore more profitable.

Of course, setting up an internet business where you are providing the end service or product is one thing. However, there are other far less expensive and easier ways to make money on the internet. One of these is affiliate marketing which is covered in the next chapter....
