If a website is going to stand any chance of success it needs to involve a search engine optimiser from the outset. It is the search engine optimisers job to provide the blueprint for the website developer to build the website. The SEO is in fact the architect who provides the plans and without him your website will sink like a stone. Most website designers don't employ a search engine optimiser because his work adds significantly to the costs and they want to remain competitive in order to get the design contract. I cover search engine optimisation in another chapter. It doesn't make particularly interesting reading and I give no secrets away but it will give you a clear insight into what you should be looking for when choosing a website designer.

So the client provides their own specifications and the designer builds the website based on what the client wants. Obviously a huge mistake and one that millions of people make because they end up with a nice shiny looking website that is never going to generate a penny in income.

This is not designed to put you off starting an internet company if you have a good idea, it is designed to put you on the right path and help you avoid making expensive mistakes.

So you have done your research, written your business plan and now want to turn it into the next eBay or mega money making internet company. You may know a website designer, they may be a friend, family member or just an acquaintance; alternatively they may have an office close to you. The obvious step would be to use a website designer you know. Better the devil you know and all that; but this would most likely be the worst business decision you could make and you are only just starting out.

First of all, business and family/friends does not make an easy bed to lie on. If things go wrong, it is always more complicated when personal relationships are involved.

Secondly, is your relation/friend or local website designer making a fortune from the internet? If they are not, it is most unlikely that they are going to be able to advise you how to make money from the internet. It may be a little embarrassing that you haven't employed them to build and develop your website but this will be nothing compared to the confrontational situations that you will be faced with when they cock up and don't deliver the goods. If you cannot make a tough business decision like this, you should not go into business. Friends and family aside, you will be faced with numerous hard business decisions over the years and you have to make the right choices at all times....
