I speak to people all the time who are thinking about having a website built and are shopping around for the cheapest quote as if they are looking for someone to install double glazing. Cost should not even be a consideration; it is all about performance and if the decision is made purely on the cost, it is a serious business mistake.

No successful business person can seriously believe that they can launch a business on the internet with a few grand and expect to make a lot of money. When people say they have been quoted a few thousand dollars/Euros/pounds for a website build and are looking for a cheaper quote I always borrow a line I once heard David use and respond by saying: "OK give me a grand." In which case they reply "Will you build me a website for a grand?" to which I respond. "No, I won't do anything but I will have saved you wasting a few grand on a website that will never earn you a penny." Facetious maybe, but I am not interested in taking people's money for the sake of getting a contract. If my advice is simply to go away and not throw their money down the drain I have protected them from falling into the hands of a cowboy website designer.

A professional website designer will not do as you ask, they will tell you what you need, how the website should function and what is required. They will not try and churn out something that fits your budget but is totally useless.

Furthermore, on top of the search engine optimisation, the design and build and the back end systems, you need to have the financial resources to pay for pay per click advertising, internet marketing, other forms of advertising and PR and a host of other strategies and techniques to build up traffic to you site. The reality is, success on the internet if you are really serious about making it big does not come cheap. If you do not have the money to invest in a serious internet project your best bet is to either keep your hands in your pockets or look for internet partners or backers.

However, before you do this, I believe you should test the water by building some web pages on Utopele. This will enable you to determine if your business idea has merits, if there is a demand and put you in a far stronger position to negotiate with any backers or potential internet partners.

There may be circumstances when it may not be advisable to build a stand alone website and you would be better off having pages designed built and hosted on a major hub site. We do this a lot when a business may have to compete with large competitors who have plenty of money to throw at their web marketing and where the budget needed to build a large site in order to compete is either restricted or would not be economically viable....
