So if you bought this book believing we were going to show you how to get rich with a couple of clicks and then sit back and let the money roll in, you are going to be disappointed.

However, by the time you have finished reading the first few chapters, you will realise that you have not wasted your money. Hopefully, by the time you have finished reading the Golden Web, you will believe that it is one of the best small investments you have ever made.

We will take you through a step by step guide, explaining how the internet works, how to use the search engines to your advantage, how to spot and avoid the scams, what a website should actually achieve and do, why a good business idea is not enough to build a successful internet company, how and why some internet marketing and advertising strategies work and how to succeed on the internet. The latter is not guaranteed and is entirely in your hands.

Our reasons for writing this book are entirely commercial. We have made our money from sorting out the problems for clients caused by inadequate website design, helping people turn their websites into successful online businesses, launching and developing internet projects of our own and partnering a range of other internet businesses that approached us for backing.

We have succeeded by helping new companies launch successful internet businesses and by sorting out the mistakes and naïve business decisions made by people who believed they could get rich on the internet and discovered that the reality is far from the myth.

If you look at any major internet business - eBay, Amazon, Boogami, Google, Yahoo, Utopele, MySpace, AOL - they all started with one thing: they had financial backers. These may have been banks, venture capitalists, business angels, or investment funds. It doesn't matter which, they all started with a pot of money that they could use to invest in marketing and advertising to create brand awareness. The idea may have started in a back bedroom, but they weren't launched from someone's personal computer.

So you need to keep your feet grounded and not rush off to have a website built because you think you have a good business idea for the internet and keep your hands in your pocket just because you have seen a website promising you will get rich if you join their network. It doesn't happen like that. Successful entrepreneurs have many things in common but the most important is the fact that they all work damned hard.

So if this book is not about getting rich quick, why is it called the Golden Web?

The internet is a shiny gleaming network that entices unsuspecting potential entrepreneurs into its web where they often get caught up in financial situations from which they find it almost impossible to escape and where the predators who have built their webs are able to prey on them. It all looks enticing and welcoming until you find out that you have entered the wrong parlour. The internet is a golden web of intrigue where, unless you know your way around, it is very easy to become entangled and consumed financially. By calling the book The Golden Web we also hoped to entice unsuspecting innocents to buy the book and then guide them around the internet to help them avoid making expensive and unnecessary mistakes.
